Get Wild in Manly: Your Guide to Australia’s Wildlife Encounters

Share this post:

One of the hottest things people Google when planning a trip to Australia is how to get up close and personal with its wild animals. So, we thought, why not create a guide on how you can see Australia’s iconic wildlife around Manly? From kangaroos and whales to goannas and sea turtles, Manly has a whole bunch of spots to check out—without needing to travel too. Ready to meet some Aussie wildlife legends? Let’s go!

Hang Out with Kangaroos and Wallabies at The Basin Campground

Looking to chill with some kangaroos? Hop on a bus from Manly and catch the ferry to The Basin Campground in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. Roos and wallabies are just hanging out, hopping around in the open grasslands like it’s no big deal. This spot is perfect for getting those Aussie wildlife selfies—just an hour away from Manly.

Spot Goannas on the Shelly Beach Walk

That coastal walk from Shelly Beach to Manly? It’s not just for stunning views—it’s also where you’ll see goannas catching some SUN. These lizards are seriously cool, so keep your eyes peeled as you stroll along. Bonus: the beach is gorgeous, so it’s a win-win.

Snorkel with Sea Turtles at Shelly Beach

Yep, Shelly Beach makes another appearance! Besides the goannas, the snorkeling here is next level. Dive into the calm waters, and you might find yourself swimming with sea turtles, stingrays, and a bunch of colourful fish. No scuba license required—just rent our free snorkel gear at reception, and you’re set for a underwater adventure.

Catch Whales at North Head

From May to November, North Head becomes prime whale-watching territory. Imagine standing on the cliffs, looking out over the ocean, and seeing humpback whales leap out of the water. It’s unreal. Plus is a great spot for a Sunset Picnic, with views to Sydney’s skyline.

Get Reptile-Ready at the Australian Reptile Park

Feeling adventurous? The Australian Reptile Park is only an hour’s drive from Manly and is packed with snakes, lizards, and even crocodiles. Plus, they’ve got Tasmanian devils and dingoes. It’s a perfect day trip if you want to go all-in on seeing some reptiles (and maybe a few cuddly critters too).

Explore Aussie Wildlife at Taronga Zoo

Want to take a shortcut and see ALL of Australia’s famous animals in one spot? Jump on the ferry to Taronga Zoo in Mosman. Koalas, kangaroos, platypuses—you name it, they’ve got it. Plus, the zoo is dedicated to conservation and research. It’s not just about seeing the animals—it’s about helping them thrive. And did we mention the views of Sydney Harbour? They’re unreal.

Be Kind to the Wildlife

While you’re out there spotting kangaroos and snorkelling with sea turtles, remember to keep your distance and respect their space. No feeding the animals, and always leave their habitat as you found it. We want to keep these wild places just as beautiful for future travellers, right?

With so many amazing animals to see around Manly, why wait? Whether you’re exploring the coastline or heading out on a ferry, the wildlife here is unmatched. So grab your camera, pack your gear, and book your stay at Stoke Beach House.
